Accommodations on Oahu
Accommodations: General Information
When you have been accepted into the English Study Tours program you will need to reserve accommodations on the Island of Oahu as soon as possible, for the length of time that you will be in Hawaii. Oahu is our home base, and many of our Study Tours activities take place on this island. You will have the choice of living with a family here in Hawaii, a homestay accommodation, or living in another kind of accommodations arrangement.
Please take note: you will not need to book outer islands accommodations, we will book your hotel room for you on the outer islands that we’ve chosen for the first and second parts of our Study Tours adventures. It is important that everyone is located in the same hotel during these outer island excursions. You have the choice of sharing a room with another student, or having your own room. Sharing a room is a lot cheaper, but some students like their privacy. If you do not want to share a room, then there is an added expense that must be paid at the time you check into the hotel (roughly twice the cost of sharing the same room). Please let us know at the time of acceptance into the program if you do not want to share a hotel room on the outer islands part of our Study Tours excursion.
You can find and reserve your accommodations in Hawaii by yourself, through your travel agent, or we can help you find a place to live. If you decide that you would like us to find you a place to live, please let us know this at the time of your acceptance into the program as we will need to reserve something for you well in advance of your arrival (at least 30 days in advance). If you choose to have us find you accommodations on Oahu, there is a placement fee for this service (see accommodations costs below).

There are families in Hawaii that open their homes to international students. Families do this to increase their exposure to international culture, and to extend "aloha" to visiting students from all over the world. Extending aloha to visitors to Hawaii is a long-standing tradition in the Hawaiian Islands.
Students often choose this accommodation option because it exposes them to American culture, an English-only living situation, and gives them the advantage of having the guidance of knowledgable local residents.
In the typical homestay situation, the student usually shares two meals a day with members of the family. Students often participate in family outings and activities (optional), and get to extend their connection to the local community through their hanai family ('hanai' is the Hawaiian word for 'adopted').
Cost of homestay is usually between US$950 - US$1100 per month. This usually includes two meals a day. There is a US$150 placement fee (one-time charge) and a US$50 per month homestay maintenance fee. ESL Hawaii screens homestay families for suitability and carefully monitors the quality of your homestay experience.
It is very important to notify us immediately upon registration if you would like to live with a homestay family while you are in Hawaii.
Studio apartments are available in Waikiki, Honolulu, Kailua, Kaneohe, and Hawaii Kai. Rental rates usually start at US$950 / month and can be much higher. Weekly rates are usually available but they are much higher than monthly rates. Please make your reservations at least one month in advance of your arrival in Hawaii. If you would like us to find you a studio, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can reserve something for you (see accommodation fees).
One-bedroom apartments are available generally in Waikiki, Honolulu, Kailua, Kaneohe, and Hawaii Kai. Monthly rates begin at US$1200 / month and can go much higher. Sharing an apartment or house with other renters is a common way for students to live in Hawaii. Rental rates vary widely and can start at around US$550 / month. Choosing room mates, housing, and location might be something best done with other students you are already familiar with or from your home country who would also like share an accommodation.

There are a few domitory-style accommodations on Oahu. Space is limited because of demand, and rent usually runs from US$450 and up. Most of these dormitories have a private room with a shared bathroom and, in some cases, a shared kitchen.

| Special English-only Shared Housing (Special Homestay) |
English Study Tours offers Special English-only shared accommodations which are available on a first-come first-served basis. These accommodations include a private room plus shared bath (or baths) and kitchen. The residents of the home are native English speakers who are trained English facilitators (usually trained, professional ESL instructor/s). This is a chance to live and study in an English-only living accommodation which is a great way to improve your day-to-day English conversation skills. See rates below.
In this program activities are ala carte. Students can choose activities to participate in, or can choose not to participate in organized activities.
Tuition costs are the same as for the regular Study Tours program but lessons are 1 and 1/2 hours per day in addition to English coaching and a 100% English only environment 24 hours per day.
